Today is the Day! eCycle and Troop 5 tackle the barrels!

Today was the Day! eCycle and Troop 5 tackled the permanent recycling barrels for the Shenandoah County Fair! Brian Ash of eCycle Green Collective showed up bright and early with his construction crew to start modification of the barrels donated by Coca Cola and O'Sullivan Films. The 100 barrels will be used throughout the year by hosts of events such as the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, and upcoming Family Fun Day held in October each year.

eCycle crew members formed an assembly line to drilled through the tops of the barrels to enlarge the holes used for the original purpose of the containers. The next group removed the entire lid using a reciprocating saw and sent the barrel on to have wooden stops screwed into the inside rim. This allowed the modified lid to sit in place of the blocks.

Members of Strasburg Boy Scout Troop 5 under the guidance of Howard Colson applied the red Coca Cola recycling wraps and then turned them over to Butch who used the heat gun to shrink the wrappers in place. Shaun Smith Area Rep for Coke and Phil Free of O'Sullivan Films did their parts with Shaun helping to empty water from the white barrels and Phil making several trips to deliver the 50 brand new barrels his company donated to the fair.

It was a cloudy day but that did not dampen the spirits of the men at work. All this was made possible by these and the 28 sponsors who contributed at least $100 each to cover the cost of recycling at the 2009 Shenandoah County Fair. Thanks to all who believe in this "no brainer" cause as some of the kids call it. After all, it is these young people who will benefit most from our becoming more responsible as adults.

Good men, good cause, good attitudes! These guys worked hard and we had some great laughs. This shot was taken mid-day with still plenty of work to do. Some times a man just has to take a break for a photo op and a roll in a barrel. That is until the camera operator stuck her two sense in. It was all in good fun like a day of volunteering should be. Thanks guys.

All Systems Go! ing Green

This was a night at the 2008 fair.

We are moving along rapidly on our Recycling efforts for 2009 fair.

Coca Cola has donated 54 white barrels
O'Sullivan Films is donating 50 sky blue barrels

  • eCycle Consultants will bring their construction crew to the fair grounds on Wednesday, August 19th for a full day of modifying the 104 barrels.

  • Boy Scout Troop 5 is again our main Recycling crew augmented by Central High School Teachers led by Meredith Bauserman.

  • Howard Colson of Troop 5 is coordinating the schedule for the 9 days and nights.

  • We have asked Woodstock Equipment to donate the use of the Kubota again.

  • We've raised $1,000 for Troop 5's efforts ( since they did this as a community service project in 2008 this covers 08 - 09) and enough to cover food, radios, gloves, bags, etc.

  • Sponsors of barrels have been added to this site.

  • Allied Waste will bring in 2 containers.

  • We still need a small container for electronics and Shenandoah County will not have one for us so if you know of someone please let me know.

  • Cheryl and Brain Ash of eCycle Consultants have arranged for a shredder to be here for a day close to the end of the fair.

If you would like to assist as a volunteer with collection of plastics and cardboard during the fair please give us a call. It may be that we can plug you into a team. Applications for volunteers will be excepted.

Community Partners We Need You!

During our initial recycling program in 2008, the Strasburg Boy Scout Troop 5 and High School Volunteers, as a community service project, collected 1,140 lbs of plastic and 2,200 lbs. of cardboard, diverting it from the landfill. In 2009 The Shenandoah County Fair will be kicking it up a notch by collecting plastic and cardboard and adding a shredder for personal documents and also a container for unwanted electronics.

Your sponsorship dollars will provide funds to the youth groups, such as the Boy Scouts, who will be collecting the recyclables as well covering expenses related to this project.

Our new white permanent recycling bins need sponsors. Bin Sponsorships are available for $100 each and will be recognized with 7”h x 17”w signs bearing business names and logos prominently displayed on the sides of bins. In addition, Bin Sponsors will receive a window decal to display in their place of business and recognition on ShenCoFair.com. The Shenandoah County Fair served approximately 60,000 people last year. What better way to show your support for your community’s youth, and their concern for our environment?

In order to receive these benefits, donation ($100 per bin) must be received by July 16, 2009. Please make checks payable to Shenandoah County Fair (memo for Recycling) and mail to PO Box 264, Woodstock, VA 22664.

Don’t miss out on this special opportunity to participate in this valuable and exciting educational project! We look forward to continuing this program in future years and setting the example for County Fairs across Virginia. If you have any questions, please email
ShenFair@shentel.net or call 540-459-3867.

2008 Totals Surpass Expectations!

Brad Dellinger the Landfill Operations Manager, Dept. of Solid Waste Management, Shenandoah County reported “The 2008 total of plastic was 1,140 pounds x 19 = 21,660 bottles. Cardboard total weight was 1,920 + 280 from the pickup = 2,200 pounds. Soda bottles = 19 per pound, Water bottles = 23 per pound."

The Fair expressed appreciation to the leaders and Boy Scouts from Strasburg's Troop 5, Central High School teachers, their spouses and to high school students from throughout the County. Sponsors like Coca Cola/National Recycling Coalition for its grant award of 150 recycling bins, Woodstock Equipment for the use of a vehicle, Tractor Supply and Rockingham Co-op, Cabin Hill Tees, Fine Line Printing and others were all important in making this happen. Susan O’Handley from Otsego County in New York, the Fair’s recycling initiative mentor, will be speaking at the January 2009 Virginia Association of Fair’s Convention in Portsmouth to help other Virginia fairs learn how to repeat this successful project.

Stoney Creek Roller Rink in Woodstock, Virginia will be hosting an after-party for the volunteers as their way of supporting the Recycling Initiative.

Look for info on how to be involved in the fair's 2009 recycling plan.

Sponsor a Recycle Bin!

April 6, 2008

Dear Business Owner:

We represent Boy Scout Troop 5, Cub Scout Pack 75 and Stonewall Jackson High School Environmental Club participating in the Shenandoah County Fair Recycling Initiative (SCFRI). This project will enable our youth groups to help our environment through the creation of a professional recycling program at the Shenandoah County Fair this summer. Our teams will be at the fair collecting and documenting recyclable materials as well as interacting with members of the public at the SCFRI exhibit booth.

In past years, waste created at the Shenandoah County Fair has ended up in our landfills. Diverting recyclable materials saves landfill space, energy and natural resources. We are participating in this project because we believe it is imperative to comply with Shenandoah County’s recycling efforts as well as to promote recycling education and set a positive example for others. SCFRI will provide one hundred recycling bins for placement throughout the fairgrounds to encourage fairgoers, vendors and exhibitors to recycle all plastic. We will recycle cardboard separately.

You can help support this project by becoming a ‘Bin Sponsor’. Bin Sponsorships are available for $100 each and will be recognized with 7”h x 17”w signs bearing business names and logos prominently displayed on the sides of bins. In addition, all Bin Sponsors will receive a window decal to display in your place of business. The Shenandoah County Fair served approximately 58,500 people last year. What better way to show your support for your community’s youth, and their concern for our environment?

In order to receive these benefits, donation ($100 per bin) must be received by June 16, 2008. Please make checks payable to Shenandoah County Fair (memo for SCFRI) and mail to PO Box 264, Woodstock, VA 22664

Don’t miss out on this special opportunity to participate in this exciting pilot project! We look forward to continuing this program in future years and setting the example for County Fairs across Virginia. If you have any questions, please email ShenFair@shentel.net or call 540-459-3867.
